In the Anabar district in the Arctic, the nomadic Dolgan tribe faces cultural erasure. To survive colonial economic strangulation and soaring costs, a young father, Vladik, defies his own father and his community’s taboos by hunting for mammoth tusks. As his father clings to ancestral reindeer hunting and Vladik risks the “plagues” of the underworld to provide for his family, this docu-fable captures a generational collision between sacred tradition and desperate survival. Set against a melting permafrost that threatens to release the very catastrophes the elders once foretold, the film is a haunting portrait of a marginalized people caught between a vanishing past and a perilous future.
