
Sushmit Ghosh is an Academy Award nominated, Peabody Award winning filmmaker, cinematographer and co-founder of Black Ticket Films, a production company invested in the power of storytelling. An IDA ‘Courage Under Fire’ honoree, Sushmit's films are recognized for their rigor of immersive, emotionally powerful storytelling.
His feature documentary, Writing With Fire (2021) became India's first feature documentary to be nominated for an Oscar. Writing With Fire has played at over 200 festivals, won 40 awards and earned Grierson, IDA, PGA, Cinema Eye Honors nominations. Sushmit's work has been supported by the Sundance Institute, Tribeca, Chicken & Egg Pictures, Doc Society, Finnish Film Foundation and profiled in major broadsheets including TIME, New York Times, LA Times and The Guardian along with being exhibited at global forums such as the United Nations and The Lincoln Center for Performing Arts.
In 2023, Sushmit co-founded the Himalayan Story Lab, an incubation space dedicated for Indigenous and Tribal filmmakers from the Indian Himalayan region that ensures access to cutting-edge filmmaking pedagogy, masterclasses, producing labs and opportunities for international collaborations. The Lab has been conceived with the aim to strengthen the next generation of Indigenous director-producers from the North-East India, who are confidently embarking on ambitious storytelling projects with global resonance.
Sushmit holds a Master’s degree in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi. His earlier award-winning shorts include Bullets and Butterflies (2007), Dilli (2010) and Timbaktu (2012). Sushmit is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In his spare time, you’ll find him motorcycling and hiking through the Himalayas.
