
Carola Fuentes (she/her) is an Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker and journalist whose work delves into complex social and political narratives, offering a profound exploration of humanity and resilience. With a focus on history, economy, and social justice, her films connect personal stories with broader socio-political contexts, creating a powerful lens for audiences worldwide.
She is best known for Chicago Boys (2016), co-directed with Rafael Valdeavellano, which explores Milton Friedman's neoliberal policies during Chilean dictator Pinochet’s regime; the film won Best Director at SANFIC 2016. She and Rafeal also co-directed Breaking the Brick (Sheffield DocFest 2022), which chronicles Chile's social uprising as a response to the long-term effects of the extreme free-market system. Both films screened at prestigious festivals such as Sheffield DocFest, Edinburgh Film Festival, Tudo Verdade, DocsMX, and SANFIC, earning critical acclaim and multiple awards.
In 2006 Carola co-founded La Ventana Cine, a Chilean B-Corporation dedicated to impactful storytelling. Carola was a 2014 Sundance Fellow and a 2005 Knight Fellow at Stanford; her work has been supported by Sundance, Doc Society, Ford Foundation, Chicken & Egg Films, and CNTV.
