Growing up against a background of “Texan masculinity” gave filmmaker Cody Stickels and his Dad an idea of who they were in the world: a “cowboy” hero of the justice system and “his little girl.” Inspired by his father’s work as a criminal defense attorney, Cody set out to make a documentary. But what started as an exposé took an unexpected turn when, a month into filming, Cody’s father attempted suicide, blowing their world apart. Everything changed—and in the process, the two became who they were meant to be and rebuilt their relationship as father and son.
